“Art Of Living” With New Roommates – House May Be A Warfront!

  • Link Copied

For decades I lived with roommates. My parents kept moving because of their job. So, I had no other choice, apart from confronting new roommates and the conflicts. Let me name things causes roommate conflictsGroceries, utility bills, cleaning schedule, smoking (inside the room), toilet paper, pets, temperature, toilet cleaning, privacy, duplicate keys, sleep-over friends or guests…it goes on and on. Above all, cultural barriers play the antagonists, when it comes to “living with new roommates”. How to avoid roommate conflicts?

Here’s the set of roommate rules that worked for us:

We followed the roommates cleaning schedule religiously.

We adhered to the sharing of utility and grocery bills!

Toilet cleaning schedule – ‘The most important thing that should never be missed from roommates’ agreement. Also unscrubbed bath tub and toilets trigger up conflicts between roommates.

We made sure that a rigid NO SMOKING INSIDE THE ROOM policy is kept up…

My roommate wasn’t easy with the pets, so I compromised with my wish to get a fluffy friend.

We compromised even with cooking chores. If one of the roommates is a lousy cook, it’s the best. So, I decided the menu and I kept it simple forever! Even unplanned pizza and Thai food serves as the sources of roommates’ conflict.

We sorted out our issues in private!

“Living with a new roommate is an art”…somehow; I learnt to live with it!
